Not sure if it is wasted exactly. I think points into a mastery increase all of the spells/styles/tactics by a certain % per point invested. It only FEELS wasted because that last point doesn't unlock anything usable.

not only does it not unlock but it also turns all your "green" abilities to "red" wonder why it does that as well. ok
